この本は、私が翻訳の働きを始めたきっかけとなった一冊です。

経験もコネクションもなく、何から始めれば良いのかさえわからなかった十年前。「卒業した神学校の先生の本でも訳してみたら?」という義兄のアドバイスに従って訳し始めたのが、恩師のデニス・ジョンソン先生も執筆に関わっておられたこの本でした。

翻訳技術も未熟で、基礎的な専門用語もほとんど知りませんでしたが、子育ての合間に、ともかく必死になって、でもワクワクして、最初から最後まで訳しました。今思えば、三男が生まれて半年の頃です。よくやったなぁ、と思いますが、赤ちゃんのお世話と子育てと家事に追われる毎日の、少しの合間に翻訳に没頭するのが、私にとってつかの間の喜びであり解放感に満たされる時間でした。

半年くらいで一通り訳を終え、その訳文を身近な人に見てもらい、様々な意見をもらう中で、少しずつ翻訳していく感覚を掴むことができたように思います。そして、最後に校正の仕事をしておられる方にも目を通していただいて、たくさんの助言をいただいていたのですが… 　

ちょうどその頃から、神学校のレジュメの翻訳依頼など、定期のお仕事をいただくようになり、最終的な訳文の修正がずっと後回しになっていました。

あれから5年以上、何度も何度も、仕上げに取り掛かりたいと思いつつも、なかなか手が回らず、時間だけが過ぎてしまいました。

そして今、ようやくようやく、この本に帰ってくることができました。本腰を入れて、見直し始めています。凍結されていた期間が長かったため、新鮮な気づきや発見が多く、楽しみつつ作業を進めています。これ以上は先延ばしにはしたくありませんので、できれば今年中、遅くとも来年の初めにでも、完成したいと考えています。

This book is the one that got me started in the translation career, or at least I attempted with what I had then.

Ten years ago, I had no experience in translation, no connections to the publishers, and no idea where to start. But just had a strong desire to do translation work. My brother-in-law casually suggested, "Why don't you translate a book by a seminary professor you graduated from?" so I just followed his advice and began translating this book, which my former professor, Dennis Johnson, was one of the co-writers.

With my insufficient skill and very little knowledge on theological terms

in Japanese, I still gave it a shot, and eventually finished the whole book. It was right after having my *third* baby, he was still 6 months old then. I wonder how on earth I managed that ... but I do remember that, in the midst of being a "mum" and daily errands and chores, a few hours a day of devoting myself to the translation was purely my joy and enthusiasm , even therapeutic for me.

I finished the book in about 6 months, and had them reviewed by several people including a professional translator/proofreader and she gave a lot of advice.

Right around that time, I started receiving regular jobs as a translator, such as requests to translate resumes for seminary, and the final translation revision kept getting pushed to the back corner of my list of priorities...

Over the past five years I have repeatedly wanted to finish the translation/revision of this book but I just couldn't get around to it, and time just kept passing.

Now, at long last, I am back to this book finally. I have set my mind to work on it again and reviewing the whole texts. It has been interesting to find many insights and discoveries from my own translation since it had been "frozen" for so many years. We don't want to procrastinate any longer, so we hope to complete it, and publish it, hopefully by the end of the next year!
