イエスさまがよいお方だから - Because Jesus is Good

10月には出版を控えている Jack Klumpenhower 著 "Show Them Jesus”、読書会も残すところあとわずか・・・！表紙のデザイン案も見せていただいて、いよいよなんだなあとワクワクしています。

個人的なことですが、今月から霊的同伴（スピリチュアル・ディレクション）を受けることになりました。はじめてのセッションで最近の神様との関係を振り返ったとき、この"Show Them Jesus" を読んでいることが自分にとって大切な気づきを与えてくれていることがわかりました。

私は大学時代に信仰に導かれたこともあり、「福音」はいつも神学的な言葉で形容されるような、ある種の「大人の言葉」でインプットされていたものでした（その傾向は神学校に入って強まるばかりです...）。ところが、この本を読む中で、子どもたちのリアルな日々の中に福音はどう息づくのかを考えていくとき、「良き知らせ」が自分自身に向けて語られていくのを感じるのです。読むたびに、自分の生活とその背後にあるものが炙り出され、照らされ、そして癒されるのを感じます。福音のもたらす新鮮な驚きと感動に、心が深く揺さぶられるのを感じるのです。

今月の読書会では、第8章「福音を教えてくれたぶどう：レッスンの時間を超えて　福音を」と第9章「罪と悪しきポップソングとの戦い：福音を人生のすべての場面に」を読み、感想を分かち合いました。この8章で挙げられる実例はとてもパワフルで、ところどころ涙してしまうほどです（「ぶどう」がどう福音を教えてくれるのか、という詳細は、ぜひ本書を手にとっていただけたらと思います）。著者の紹介する子どもたちの例の中に、「神様に喜ばれることをしたい」という動機ではじまったことも、いつのまにか「神様にこんなに仕えている私ってすごいでしょ」という高慢に変わってしまう私たちの姿がよく見えます。その話の中で、著者が子どもたちにこう呼びかけるシーンがあります。

「... 神さまが君を神さまの子どもとしてくださるのは、君がその資格を獲得したからじゃなくて、イエスさまがよいお方だから、なんだ。君は神さまの前で、あるいはみんなの前で、自分が人のために何かをしているんだって、証明する必要はないんだよ」

〈私が「良いこと」をすれば、神様は私をもっと愛してくれる。私が「良いこと」をしなくなったら、神様はもう私を愛してくれない。だから神様の愛を受け続けるために、頑張らなくてはいけない。〉私たち自身、いつのまにかこのように考えてしまうことが、いかに多いことでしょうか。そしてそのような福音と真逆のメッセージを子どもたちに伝えてしまうことが、どれほど多いことか...! 私たちが子どもたちの心や動機を見るよりも、表立って見える「信仰的」に見える行いや、大人たちの用意したプログラムを「無事に」やりとげることを重視するあまり、子どもたちが本当の意味で十字架の意味を体験する機会を奪ってしまっていることも、多々あることに気付かされます。

分かち合いの中でもその点が話されました。本書では「キリストのいるところ（教会/教会学校の場）で罪が暴かれることは望ましいことだ」という話が出てきます。教会学校で二人の女の子が喧嘩をし、クラスが中断してしまうというくだりです。著者は「けんかをクラスに持ち込まず、ここではきちんと振る舞いなさい」と二人を叱ってクラスを再開しますが、その場を丸くおさめることを優先してしまったことを反省します。そのときこそ、彼女たちが十字架の前に一緒にでていくことができる機会だったはずなのに。そして子どもたちがいま学んでいる福音を適応できる、まさに最高の機会となるはずだったのに、と。

用意しているプログラムをいったんとめて、そこで予想外に起きていることを、福音の目で子どもたちと一緒に見つめ直す。それはできたら素晴らしいけど、実際のところ、とても難しいことだよね、という話になりました。実際、教会学校や子ども向けのイベントの反省会で話されることは、いかに子どもたちがそこでイエスさまに出会えたか、ということよりも、いかにあの子をもっと早く静かにさせるべきだったかとか、あの遊びは時間が足りなくてプログラムが押してしまったとか、そういうことばかりが話し合われがちだ、と。

「この本で著者がやろうとしていることは、Christ-centered （キリスト中心）でありながら、program-oriented（プログラム志向）でも carriculam oriented （カリキュラム志向）でもなく、kids-oriented （子ども志向）なんだよね」という老松さんの言葉に頷きました。今、目の前にいる子どもたちが、どうイエスさまに出会っていくか。子どもたちの内に、良き知らせをもって働いてくださる聖霊なる主の御業に、期待していく者でありたいと思わされます。

Our Japanese translation of "Show Them Jesus” by Jack Klumpenhower is scheduled to be published later this month, and we're so excited! We have only one more reading session left to finish the book. We were also thrilled to see some cover design proposals, and I can't wait to see the actual book once it's out there!

On a personal note, I started receiving spiritual direction sessions this month. As I reflected on my recent relationship with God during my first session, I realized that reading “Show Them Jesus” has been giving me important insights in my spiritual life. 

I came to faith in college, and so the gospel was always input and described in kind of theological terms (a tendency that has only intensified since entering seminary...). However, as I read this book, I am relearning what the good news is in a different perspective as we learn what it is like for children to live out the gospel in their every day life. Each time I read it, I feel my daily walk and my heart being seared, illuminated, and healed. I can feel my heart being deeply moved in a different way.

In this month's session, we read and shared our thoughts on Chapter 8, “The Grapes That Taught Good News - Taking the Good News Beyond Lesson Time” and Chapter 9, “The War on Sin and Bad Songs - Taking the Good News into all of life." The story shared by the author in Chapter 8 was especially powerful that I found myself often tearing up as I read. In that episode of the children in his class shows the fact that we often start doing good deeds out of the good motive of pleasing God, but how it can so quickly turn into pride. We started thinking, "Isn't it great that I am serving God so selflessly?"  To such children, the author kindly speaks to them: 

"God welcomes you as his child because Jesus is good, not because you're good enough to earn it.. You don't have to prove to him or any of the rest of us how unselfish you are." (p.157)

Oh how so often am I prone to think, "If I do good, God will love me more" or "If I stop doing good things, God will no longer love me"? Then it leads us to think "I have to work harder to keep pleasing God in order to receive his love." How often do we ourselves think in this way before we know it? And how often do we pass this on to our children - a message that is the exact opposite of the gospel...! We are so focused on the seemingly faithful deeds and the “successful” completion of the program prepared for kids, and tend to neglect the hearts and motives of the children, ending up depriving them of the opportunity to truly experience the meaning of the cross. 

There is a part in the book where the author mentions the fact, that it is desirable for sins to be exposed where Christ is. He shares an episode of two girls fighting in the middle of the Sunday school - it was so bad that the lesson in the classroom had to be interrupted. The author scolds them, saying, “Don't bring your quarrels to class. Behave properly here,” and resumes the class. But he says he regretted that he gave priority to settling the situation, while this should have been an opportunity for the girls to come together in front of the cross. It would have been the best opportunity for the children to adapt and live out the gospel they were learning just there.

We discussed how wonderful it would be if we could have stopped the program like that for the sake of an unexpected gospel-learning opportunity. But it's very difficult in reality. In fact, often the debriefing meetings for kids' ministry events tend to be all about how we could have done better only in terms of the logistic level and not about whether the kids have encountered Christ in all that was happening there. 

I agreed with what Oimatsu-san said about what we appreciate about this book. He said, "I guess what the author is suggesting is to be Christ-centered for sure,  yet not program-oriented or curriculum-oriented, but kids-oriented." We are to be paying attention to how the kids can encounter Christ, whether it is through the lesson we prepare or even through the unexpected accidents that happen in the classroom. We are called to expect the mighty work of His Spirit, who works in the hearts of children to know the good news.
