本当にたいせつなことのために - Striving for What Really Matters

"Show Them Jesus" の読書会も4回目となり、半分以上まで読み進めてきました。出版の日も近づいてきているということで、ワクワクしています...！

今回読み合わせてきたのは6章「おしゃべりろばとイエス：旧約聖書から福音を教える」と7章「教会で一番長いリスト：新約聖書から福音を教える」。いま私は神学校で説教学のクラスを受講しているのですが、その学びと重なるところも多くあったりして、とても興味深く教えられる章でした。私自身がいくつか教えられ気付かされたことを短く紹介します。

・「（説教が）神中心でないならキリスト中心にはなり得ない」

という言葉が、話しあう中で出てきました。この本は「どのようにして子どもたちにイエスを見せるか」ということがテーマになっているわけですが、行き着くところは説教論と重なるところが非常に多くあることに気づかされます。旧約聖書から教えるときに起こりがちな過ちは、登場人物に注目し、「この人のように神様に信頼しましょう」「あの人のように神様に逆らう人にはならないようにしましょう」などという倫理的なレッスンに終始してしまうことだ、と筆者は語ります。そうではなく、「神は何をしておられるか」「神はどういうお方か」と、すべての出来事を主権をもって紡いでおられる神に目を留めるとき、イエスを指し示す福音が浮かび上がってきます。6章の中では実際に旧約聖書の箇所をいくつか取り上げ、そこから神がどのようなお方だとわかるのか、それはイエスとどのように結びついているのか、そしてそのことを信じることで私たちの生き方がどう変わるのか、ということが例として挙げられています。

・「聖書の教師は聖書を知らなければならない」

という筆者の言葉に唸らされました。ごく真っ当な、当然のことですが、あらためて自分自身を顧みさせられます。この本は「このステップさえ追って真似すれば、教会学校をするのが楽になりますよ」というようなハウツー本ではありません。教える大人自身が何度も深くじっくりと聖書を学ぶことが不可欠になる筆者の提唱は、（時間も人手も足りない日本の教会の現実の中ではなおさら）非現実的に感じられることもあるかもしれません。しかし著者は、それが必ず報われるものであると語り、「大切なことのためなら、時間は見つかります」と語ります。子どもたちがイエスに出会うことが一体どれほど大切なことなのか知っているのであれば、そこにかける時間の優先順位は変わってくるのでしょう。日本の教会における時間/人手不足の問題はもっと大きな複雑な問題なので、別に議論される必要がありますが（読書会でもよくその話になります）、忙しくなるほど（たとえそれが説教準備であったとしても...!)「聖書を読むのにそんなに時間をかけていられない」と思ってしまう私自身の心の中が照らされ、「本当に必要なこと」（ルカ10：42）が何なのか改めて考えさせられました。

何よりもこの本の素晴らしいところは、著者が自分の心の内をとても率直に書いてくれているので、非常に親近感をもって読めるところです。成功体験談やノウハウだけを連ねるのではなく、「あの時あのように教えてしまったのは間違いだった」「自分のプライドが子どもたちに歪んだ福音を伝えてしまった」と正直に分かち合ってくれています。そして同時にいつも励まされるのは、彼のうちからほとばしり出る、子どもたちと主イエスへの愛と情熱です。日本の教会にいらっしゃる多くの方々に、ぜひ手にとっていただき、福音の素晴らしさを改めて味わい、励まされていただきたいと願っています。

We had the fourth reading session of “Show Them Jesus” and now we are more than halfway through the book. It is so exciting that the publication date for this book is approaching!

This time we talked about chapter 6, “The Talking Donkey and Jesus: Teaching the Good News from the Old Testament” and chapter 7, “The Longest List in the Church: Teaching the Good News from the New Testament.” I am currently taking a preaching class in seminary, and I found the chapters to be very interesting and instructive, with many overlaps with what I am learning. I would like to briefly introduce some of the things I was taught and reminded of.

“If [the sermon] is not God-centered, it cannot be Christ-centered."

This book is about “how to show Jesus to children,” and I realized that it has a lot of overlap with what we talk about preaching. The author says that the mistake that tends to happen when teaching from the Old Testament is to focus on the characters and end up with moral lessons such as, “Let's trust God like this person” or “Let's not be a person who opposes God like that person." Instead, by focusing on who God is and what God is doing in the passage, it allows us to see God who is behind every event and is writing the big story that sheds light on the good news of Jesus. In chapter 6, he actually takes some Old Testament passages and gives examples of how we can see who God is, how that is connected to Jesus, and how believing that changes the way we live our lives.

“A Bible teacher must know the Bible.”

We were struck by the author's statement. It's just so obvious and expected, but it makes me reflect on myself again. This book is not a how-to book that says, “If you follow and copy these steps, it will be easy for you to teach at Sunday School. The author's suggestion that it is essential for the adults who teach to study the Bible deeply, carefully, and repeatedly may seem unrealistic at times (even more so in the reality of the Japanese church, where time and manpower are in such a short supply). However, the author says that that process will always pay off, and says "We find time for what matters." If we truly know how crucial it is for children to encounter Jesus, we might prioritize our time differently. The issue of time/manpower shortage in the Japanese church is a much larger and more complex issue that needs to be discussed separately (and we often talk about it in our reading groups), but as for myself, the busier I get (even if it is for sermon preparation...!) I tend to think “I can't spend that much time reading the Bible.” It shed light on such a heart of mine and made me rethink what is “one thing necessary” (Luke 10:42).

One of the most wonderful things about this book is that the author writes very genuinely with vulnerability from his own heart, making it very relatable for us as readers. Instead of just listing a series of success stories and methods, he frankly shares things like "The way I taught at that time was a mistake" or "There, I shared the twisted good news that is not really good because of my pride."  At the same time, I am always so encouraged by his love and passion for children and the Lord Jesus that emanates from him. I hope that many people in Japanese churches will read this book, and be encouraged as they experience the goodness of the gospel once again on their own.
